J.R. Ignacio is Dyno.
As I see his head bop he makes a quick stroke with his brush. Within each beat streaming through his red headphones, a rhythm of flowing lines pierce through the blank canvas. From his mind to the tip of his fingertips, the sounds heard articulate a free style only his paintbrush can interpret, thus creating a translation between music and his own imagination to define his canvas.
This reliance among the relationship between the interpretation of beats and art expression identify as one of the creative processes in which drive J.R. Ignacio (a.k.a. Dyno)’s art.
“Music always tends to sneak into my paintings lately.”
By listening to full albums from start to finish, this 24-year old Vallejo native has used this as his new approach to his work. By exercising his thoughts and outstretching his imagination, he’s taken it upon himself to interpret all he hears into one drawing in one setting.
“Recently I started vibing off beats and working off block patterns to represent what I hear. Letting them flow across my piece for easy eye movement.” Most recently he’s finished a piece inspired by the sounds of Kid Cudi’s “Man on the Moon” and U-N-I and RoBlvd’s “Love Supreme.”
Initially what he hears is what he dreams up and what he feels is what he portrays. That’s the basis of his work. It’s through this self-inflicted environment in which he creates and manifests a world of his own design. Accustomed to forming pieces through freestyle expression, Dyno creates his pieces amidst creating his own thought. He’s become an artist that often starts off never knowing exactly what he’s going to draw or paint until the moment strikes a nerve, emotion, or beat.
This spontaneous nature is a form of artistry he’s honed ever since he was a child. When he was younger, Dyno was a curious kid who seemed to act upon impulse. Embracing and experimenting with different forms of art at a young age, he’s tried everything from graffiti to graphic design to silk screening shirts, which is a huge step up from burning crayons on a light bulb and sticking crayons up his nose (that’s still art right?) when he was four.
“I’m an art FIEND!”
Whatever notion of art expression struck Dyno’s mind, he wouldn’t hesitate to pursue it. There was no reason to. Even if he tried, everything in his lifetime has consistently led him to pursue art in any form and fashion. All signs always directed him towards his passion. But it wasn’t until his last year in college when Dyno realized he wanted to take his art to another level. While having taken classes all ranging from photoshop to film to other media arts, Dyno developed more confidence in his craft. He was beginning to realize this is truly what he wanted to do for a living that a regular job wasn’t going to cut it anymore. It was this defining moment when he decided what he wanted to do in life was to share his art with the public.
“I do want to make a living off my art. I don’t want to be rich or famous [though]. It wouldn’t hurt! But that’s not my ultimate goal. I just want what I love doing to be the main thing bringing income.”
Now he’s independently showcasing his art in galleries all over the Bay Area and making way for his art to be recognized. This “solo machine,” as he likes to call himself is a one-man band designing and selling his own t-shirts and art for folks to purchase. By using social network sites such as myspace, facebook, blogger, and twitter, he’s creating a name for himself all on his own. In addition, he’s putting Vallejo arts back on the map with Open Session Saturdays.
What once started off as him just drawing dinosaurs at work has now become a trademark of his that many now love and recognize. It’s with his undying passion and love for the arts that has pioneered this success. By following his passion and never giving in, he has now become a fine product of his own craft and has paved the way for others trying to chase their dreams.
